Pitch : Magazines

Pitch - Magazines

Initial Ideas;

Moodboard of ideas for main cover images/stories and articles for website
Moodboard of ideas for main cover images/stories and articles for website

  • Men's Urban Lifestyle magazine
  • 16-25 year old, socially & culturally aware, middle market demographic
  • Lifestyle, Aspirational, Cultural and Motivational topics
  • Fashion, style, and culture for men, though articles on food, movies, fitness, sex, music, travel, celebrities' sports, technology, and books
The magazine will be a monthly magazine covering a new topic every edition - meaning 12 topics will be covered on the front cover a year. These 12 topics will be completely different but follow the magazines usual trends. Through studying the brief, I have decided that the magazine will have a heavy emphasis on representation as stated by the brief - therefore I will aim to incorporate different types of ethnicity and ages. This is in order to represent the underrepresented and give an urban touch to magazine norms - this will be a significant USP of our magazine.

The magazine will be similar to the GQ - a magazine which I have done thorough research on. The magazine will cover a vast number of topics which appeal to as much men as possible - promoting inclusivity. Also by covering a vast range of topic, similar to the GQ, this allows audiences who may not have been aware of certain topics to educate themselves about the wider world and life around them.

Prototype Name & Logo;

I have chosen a prototype name - meaning as of now it is the name of the magazine but it may change just before the finalisation of the statement of intent.

The name I have chosen is "Urbique" - this is a fusion of the word "Urban" & "Unique". The name essentially represents what our magazine portrays, we are an urban lifestyle magazine providing wide range of topics to our audience which we deem to be unique in the magazine world. It is a short, very catchy and easy to remember which will make our magazines easier to market. In guidance with the brief, we have also added a selling line " lifestyle with a hint of urban" which will help audience to be able to easily know what the magazine stands for and wishes to be associated with. I have also included a italicised and red touch to our name which will form the magazines masthead - this is also an aspect which follows the brief requirements.

Prototype Shots

Name of Model : Luca
Age: 17

I was able to tag song to a my friends brands photo shoot - then I edited the pictures using CapCut
This shot would be used as a front cover. It is a clean aesthetically looking picture which can be used for aspirational value towards the target audience. (Footballer)

Example of a magazine I want eminate

Stormzy - GQ Magazine

Rashford - GQ Magazine

Michael B. Jordan - GQ Magazine

Lebron James - GQ Magazine

Industrial Context : Brand - GQ Magazine

 Brief History:

 Gentlemen's Quarterly was launched in 1931 in the United States as Apparel Arts. It was a men's fashion magazine for the clothing trade, aimed primarily at wholesale buyers and retail sellers. Initially it had a very limited print run and was aimed solely at industry insiders to enable them to give advice to their customers. The popularity of the magazine among retail customers, who often took the magazine from the retailers, spurred the creation of Esquire magazine in 1933.

Apparel Arts continued until 1957 when it was transformed into a quarterly magazine for men, which was published for many years by Esquire Inc.Apparel was dropped from the logo in 1958 with the spring issue after nine issues, and the name Gentlemen's Quarterly was established.

Gentlemen's Quarterly was re-branded as GQ in 1967. The rate of publication was increased from quarterly to monthly in 1970. In 1979 Condé Nast bought the publication, and editor Art Cooper changed the course of the magazine, introducing articles beyond fashion and establishing GQ as a general men's magazine in competition with Esquire. Subsequently, international editions were launched as regional adaptations of the U.S. editorial formula. Jim Nelson was named editor-in-chief of GQ in February 2003; during his tenure, he worked as both a writer and an editor of several National Magazine Award-nominated pieces, and the magazine became more oriented towards younger readers and those who prefer a more casual style.

GQ (U.S.) first named their Men of the Year in 1996, featuring the award recipients in a special issue of the magazine. British GQ launched its annual Men of the Year awards in 2009[16] and GQ India launched its version the following year. Spanish GQ launched its Men of the Year awards in 2011 and GQ Australia launched its version in 2007.

Audience Profile

 My mass market audience will be 16-25 year olds.  Individuals of this age group will most like have a  thorough awareness of pop culture. Furthermore, this age group will be very familiar with social networking outlets such as Snapcat, Instagram , Tiktok , etc. 16-25 year old will not tend to gravitate towards magazines for entertainment in comparison with other media products, though this may vary depending on whether they have an interest in the specific magazine. Topics of interest could include fashion trends, popular celebs and/or lifestyle trends.

16-25 year olds spend an average of 73 minutes on youtube per day

41% of tiktokers users are 16-25 year olds and spend an average of 52

50% of snapchat users are under the age of 25

16-25 year olds will like up-to-date and current news, therefore, the magazine has to keep up with the latest trends.  They are likely to enjoy travelling, listening to music, and learning about diverse cultures, thus there will be puffs or a contents page which will allow readers to see mini stories that they be interested in.

16-25 year olds mentalities and ideologies have altered over the years. We now see that individuals of this age group tend to form their own ideologies and do not want to be told or forced to think in a certain way. There has been an increase in audiences creating their own media, such as YouTube videos. Youtube has become a means for 16-25 year old to express their viewpoints as well as create their own media products. this has also allowed celebrities to reach their audiences in a much informal manner, engaging more people. As a result, more magazines are asking readers to participate by sending in questions to be answered by celebrities in the next edition, which engages the audiences more.
